GEO, generative engine optimization, is the work of getting a business named and described accurately inside AI-generated answers. When someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity or Grok who to hire, the engine returns a short list of firms. GEO decides whether you are on it.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO competes for a position in a list of links. GEO competes to be the answer. Google shows ten results and the searcher chooses. An AI engine names two or three firms and the buyer usually stops there, so the gap between being named and not being named is far wider than the gap between position three and position eight.

Usually not on its own. Language models overwhelmingly recommend businesses that third parties have described: directories, association listings, industry roundups, local press, review platforms. A business can publish hundreds of articles on its own domain and still be invisible in AI answers, because nothing outside its own website confirms it exists. Months, not weeks. Directory and citation placements have to be submitted, verified and then picked up. Entity corrections have to propagate. Any agency promising an AI visibility change in the next scan is guessing.
