Snapchat Memories: What You Need to Know

Snapchat just introduced its newest feature: Memories. It allows you to save your snaps and stories to a personal collection. The app began as a way to send photos in a totally ephemeral way. In 2013, they introduced Stories. The stories feature allows users to curate photos and videos to be visible to their friends for 24 hours. Memories will be another step in that direction.

Now, instead of saving snaps and stories to your phone, you can save them to your Memories collection for later use. You can create new stories from saved snaps, combine them into one long chronicle, or add new customizations. You can even use photos from your phone’s camera roll! When you send Memories, they will be framed in white to differentiate them from real-time snaps.

To access Memories, swipe up on the camera screen. You’ll see all your saved snaps. From there you can switch over to your camera roll or click the search icon to find exactly what you’re looking for. If you want to protect certain images from being seen by others, you can save them to the passcode-protected  “My Eyes Only”section.

To save a snap to your Memories just after you’ve taken it, you can tap the icon in the lower left corner of the snap preview screen. Don’t worry, you’ll be able to edit filters, doodles, and stickers later too.

So what does this mean for the future of Snapchat? Well, the in-app camera roll is a game changer. It allows you to search by location, date, stickers, emojis, and even objects. It also lets you browse photo’s you’ve “Taken Nearby” your geographical location and includes a Flashback feature which shows you which snaps you’ve taken on this date in the past.

The ability to upload photos will allow for cross-platform content sharing and for carefully curated stories. This could definitely affect the lighthearted nature of the app.

These changes mean big things for competition between social media apps. We can’t wait to see what comes next!
