Creating a Vision for Growth
Many say that if your business is not growing, it is dying. Well, growth always seems to be at the forefront of business owners’ minds, myself included. The concept of growing your business, however, often becomes clouded by daily mundane tasks. This is particularly true early on when they drive business from one day to the next. If not articulated on a regular basis, the “vision” can get lost. You and your employees may find that they are not exactly seeing the same one.
So the question then becomes, how do you continue to grow and maintain that vision for success without getting lost in the shuffle? One tool I have used is visualization. It’s the “fake it ’til you make it” mentality, envisioning your success or growth until it becomes reality. While this may seem silly to a degree, some of the greatest athletes in the world use this same technique to see the finish line, the winning point, the goal of making it to the end. It really does work.
This process of visualization starts with a process of ‘leaning into the future.’ That is, to keep grounded in what you believe and the current status of the business. Visualize the direction and place where your business will be next year, in 2 years, or even 5 years from now. Document these visions, share them with your staff. You can begin to move toward your business’ future as a team. Setting your mental state for success will lead to consistency. Over time, you will put in the daily work to overcome your obstacles and become what you see yourself – your business – becoming.
How does it work? Start off by separating yourself from your daily routine. In fact, get out of the office for a while. Find a place free from distractions. Grab a piece of paper and outline what your business will look like in 2-3 years. Don’t focus so much on “how” you will achieve these goals but on “where” you will be and “what” that looks like. Envision your staff, your office, your customers. Think about your life outside of work, everything that you can think of . Write it all out. You can (and will) worry about filling in the gaps and details later. Keep in mind that you may need help along the way. You may also need to refer back to your “vision” often to stay the course.
Remember that the most successful people do not all of a sudden wake up with money. They build consistency in their mind and daily lives towards progress. They turn their vision into reality. Consistency is key and believing in your vision is paramount – even when you fall down.
