Between April and July 2026, DeltaV Digital tracked 21,075 AI engine responses across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, then analyzed 25,337 citations. In healthcare, articles earned 54 percent of citations. Listicles earned zero. That single data point tells a treatment center more about what to publish than any generic AI-content checklist, and it is the opposite of what wins in most other industries.
If you run marketing for a residential program, a PHP or IOP, or a detox facility, this matters because your competitors for AI attention are not just other treatment centers. They are Mayo Clinic, WebMD, the CDC and Reddit threads written by people who have been through treatment. The study measured which of those sources AI engines actually trust once they read them, and the gap is bigger than most marketers assume.
What AI cites for healthcare, in numbers
DeltaV’s report splits two metrics that get confused constantly: citation share (how much of the total citation pool a format wins) and citation rate (how often a page earns a citation once an AI engine actually reads it). For a category where a wrong answer has real consequences, engines behaved like strict editors.
| Source | Retrieved for health queries | Citation rate (per retrieval) |
|---|---|---|
| Healthline | Constantly | 0.55 |
| WebMD | Constantly | 0.33 |
| Medical News Today | Constantly | 0.24 |
| Mayo Clinic | Frequently | 1.79 |
| CDC | Frequently | 1.85 |
| NIH | Frequently | 1.66 |
AI engines read the consumer health sites just as often as the institutional ones. They just do not lean on them the same way when they write the answer. That is the trust gap treatment center content has to close: not “get read,” but “get relied on.”
Why listicles do not work here, when they work everywhere else
Across the eight industries in the study, listicles earned 61 percent of citations in B2B technology services and 28 percent in specialty food. In healthcare they earned 0 percent. A “top 10 rehab centers in Arizona” page, written the way a B2B roundup gets written, is exactly the wrong format for this category. What wins instead is a real article: named clinical detail, a specific population served, admissions process explained in plain language, and institutional-grade sourcing behind any claim about outcomes or method.
A family in Scottsdale asking an AI assistant “what happens in the first week of inpatient detox” is not going to get a ranked list back. They are going to get a synthesized answer built from two or three articles the engine trusted enough to rely on. If your program’s own site is not one of those two or three, the AI answered the question and sent the family to a competitor without you ever knowing the query happened.
The format that is underused and outperforms
One more number from the study matters here: comparison pages earned only 4.1 percent of total citations but the highest citation rate of any format, 1.87 per retrieval, 45 percent above the portfolio average. Almost nobody in behavioral health marketing builds an honest “PHP vs IOP” or “detox vs medical stabilization” comparison page written at the same clinical standard as a Mayo Clinic article. That is the cheapest citation win sitting on the table for a treatment center in Naples, Minneapolis, or anywhere else competing for the same AI attention.
What this means for your program this quarter
- Publish institutional-grade articles, not roundup content. Named clinical detail, real admissions detail, sourced claims.
- Build at least one comparison page per level of care you offer (PHP vs IOP, residential vs outpatient, detox vs medical stabilization).
- Structure every page with FAQ schema so the exact question a family asks an AI assistant maps to a direct, extractable answer on your site.
- Check whether your program is being retrieved at all before worrying about the trust gap. A page that never gets read cannot be cited.
This is the same fingerprint problem we work through with programs like Naples Retreat: building admissions-facing content structured the way AI engines actually consume it, institutional-grade articles and comparison pages with real FAQ schema, rather than generic blog volume. It is the difference between being retrieved and being relied on.
This kind of citation-structure work is part of what we run inside Propel OS, and you can see the pattern in how it has played out for other clients.
Frequently asked questions
Do listicles help a treatment center show up in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?
No. In the 2026 DeltaV Digital citation study, listicles earned 0 percent of AI citations in healthcare, the only industry in the study where that format won nothing. Articles with real clinical authority earned 54 percent instead.
Why does AI cite Mayo Clinic over WebMD for the same question?
Both get read constantly. The study measured a real trust gap: Mayo Clinic converted retrievals into citations at 1.79 per retrieval, WebMD at 0.33. AI engines made a visible quality judgment between lookalike consumer health content and primary medical authority, and a treatment center’s own site is judged the same way.
What is the single highest-value page a treatment center can build for AI search right now?
A comparison page. Across all eight industries studied, comparison pages earned the highest citation rate of any format, 1.87 per retrieval, 45 percent above average, while making up only 4.1 percent of total citations. Few behavioral health marketers build them, which is what makes them the cheapest win available.
How do I know if my treatment center’s website is even being read by AI engines?
A free AI visibility scan checks exactly that: whether your program is being retrieved when an AI assistant answers a real admissions question, and if not, why. Run one at peek.bspkn.co.
Run your own free scan at peek.bspkn.co to see whether your program shows up when a family asks an AI assistant for a treatment center like yours, and what it would take to close the gap.
