Why ChatGPT Skips Twin Cities Financial Advisors

Ask ChatGPT for a financial advisor in Minneapolis or Wayzata, Minnesota. There is a good chance your firm’s name never comes up, even if you rank well on Google. According to SOCi’s 2026 Local Visibility Index, the average financial services brand appears in Google’s local 3-Pack 44.0 percent of the time, but is recommended by ChatGPT only 3.1 percent of the time. Financial services is the least saturated category SOCi measured, which means most RIAs and independent advisors have not fixed this yet, and the ones who do are pulling ahead fast.

That gap is not a glitch. AI assistants do not rank ten blue links and let a person choose. They return one answer, maybe two. Either your firm is in that answer or it is not part of the conversation at all. SOCi calls this “15 times more selective than traditional local search,” and the data backs it up: financial services firms that look fine in Google are frequently invisible the moment someone asks an AI assistant the same question.

The numbers, by platform

SOCi’s 2026 Local Visibility Index tracked recommendation rates across the major AI assistants for the financial services category specifically, banks, credit unions, insurance agencies, mortgage companies and advisory firms. Here is how the category compares to traditional search:

Channel Financial Services Benchmark
Google local 3-Pack 44.0%
ChatGPT recommendation rate 3.1%
Gemini recommendation rate 16.4%
Perplexity recommendation rate 9.9%

The spread between firms that get this right and firms that do not is wide. SOCi’s data names Liberty Tax as a category leader: 98.7 percent of its locations have a claimed Google profile, a 4.6 star average rating, 68.3 percent Google 3-Pack visibility, and recommendation rates of 19.2 percent on Gemini and 26.9 percent on Perplexity, both well above the category average. Transamerica sits at the other end: only 66.2 percent of its agent profiles are claimed, its average rating is 3.4 stars, and its Google 3-Pack visibility is 3.6 percent, with AI recommendation rates near zero across every platform SOCi measured. Same category, same AI models, completely different outcome, because the underlying signals are different.

Why AI assistants skip most financial advisors

Three things decide whether an AI assistant recommends a firm, per SOCi’s 2026 analysis:

  • Data accuracy. AI models cross-check your name, address, phone number, hours and service description across every platform that mentions you. When Google, Yelp, Facebook and your own site disagree, confidence drops and the model moves to the next option. Business data on ChatGPT and Perplexity is accurate only 68 percent of the time industry-wide.
  • Reputation as a pass or fail filter. In regular search, a 3.8 star rating can still rank on page one. In AI search results, SOCi found it is more likely to get a firm excluded outright. Locations that ChatGPT actually recommends average a 4.3 star rating. Below that line, the ratings gap becomes the reason a firm never appears.
  • Specific content, not generic copy. AI assistants respond to a conversational query, not a keyword. A generic “comprehensive financial planning services” page gives the model nothing to match against a question like “who handles retirement planning for a small business owner in Hennepin County.” SOCi’s research puts the recommendation odds for templated, non-specific content at effectively zero.

None of this is a paid placement problem. A Twin Cities RIA cannot buy its way into a ChatGPT answer the way it can buy a search ad. The only lever is whether the underlying data, reputation and content actually earn the recommendation, which is exactly the work GEO (generative engine optimization) is built to do. See our GEO services overview for how that work is structured, and our financial advisor marketing page for the compliance-aware version built for RIAs and independent advisors.

What this looks like for a Minneapolis or Wayzata advisor

BSPKN runs the GEO and content program for 360 Financial, an RIA headquartered in Wayzata, Minnesota with a second office in Elk River, across both Google Business Profile locations and the firm’s compliance-reviewed content calendar. The engagement is built the way SOCi’s data says it has to be for this category: profile and listing accuracy checked on a schedule, review response handled consistently rather than reactively, and content written to answer a specific client question for a specific office rather than a generic service description repeated across locations. That structure, not a one-time fix, is what the leader-versus-laggard gap in the SOCi data actually describes.

If you want to see where your own firm stands before changing anything, run the free AI visibility scan at Peek. It checks how your firm actually shows up when someone asks an AI assistant for an advisor like you, the same way the queries behind the SOCi data were run, and you keep the report either way.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my firm rank in Google but not show up in ChatGPT?

Google’s 3-Pack and an AI assistant’s recommendation are built from different signals. Ranking in the 3-Pack mostly reflects proximity, category match and basic listing completeness. An AI recommendation additionally requires cross-platform data agreement, a reputation score above roughly 4.3 stars, and content specific enough to answer the exact question being asked. A firm can clear the first bar and miss all three of the second set.

Can a financial advisor pay to appear in ChatGPT results?

No. There is no ad product that places a firm inside an AI assistant’s answer. Visibility comes from the underlying data, reputation and content signals being strong enough to earn the recommendation, which is why SOCi frames this as a fundamentals problem rather than a budget problem.

What is the single biggest lever for an RIA to improve AI visibility?

Reputation. SOCi’s data shows AI assistants treat a sub-4.3-star average as closer to a pass or fail filter than a ranking signal, which means a consistent review response process often moves the needle faster than new content does. Content and listing accuracy still matter, but a weak reputation can override both.

Does this apply to independent advisors, not just multi-location firms?

Yes. SOCi’s financial services benchmark spans banks, credit unions, insurance agencies, mortgage companies and advisory firms of every size. A single-location independent RIA is evaluated on the same three signals, data accuracy, reputation and content specificity, as a 200-branch bank.

How do I find out where my firm stands right now?

Run the free AI visibility scan at peek.bspkn.co. It shows what an AI assistant currently says, or does not say, about your firm and keeps the report so you have a baseline to improve against.

Once you have a baseline, a 15 minute strategy call is the fastest way to turn it into a plan, scoped for the SEC and FINRA guardrails an RIA has to operate inside.
